Memorial Day Address by Woodrow Wilson 1915
The Civil War created in this country what had never existed before a national consciousness. It was not the salvation of the Union; it was the rebirth of the Union.
New Englanders love a parade and East Hampton starts off with one on Memorial Day. We settled in for this in a nice shady spot and enjoyed the short and sweet but memorable procession, this year included 2 Black Hawk flyovers.
Afterwards we headed over to the Amasa Day House in Moodus which has been transformed into a Civil War Union soldiers' camp. While Mason played with some of the children from the 1860's Jon and I enjoyed a performance by The Victorian Lady, demonstrating the appropriate clothing for a Civil War-era lady.
Of course Memorial Day comes with the prerequisite BBQ and we thoroughly enjoyed a get together at Jon's parents house for one.
